Numeric Binning

Puts each number into a labelled range — equal-width bins, bins with the same number of rows, or edges you choose such as 0-100, 100-500, 500+.

When to use it

Use it to turn a measure into bands for reporting or grouping: order size bands, age groups, score ranges. Follow it with Summarize or Cross Tab to count rows per band.

Worth knowing

  • Each bin includes its lower edge and stops just before the next: 100 falls in 100-500. Values below the first edge are labelled <first edge.
  • Edges can be a comma list (0, 100, 500) or JSON ([0,100,500]) and must go up from left to right.
  • Equal frequency keeps equal values in the same bin, so bins can differ in size when many values repeat.
  • Untick Generate New Column to replace the numbers with their bin labels.
