Text Sequence

Makes a series of codes: a pattern that counts through letters and digits, or a list of your own values that repeats.

When to use it

Use it for reference codes, seat or bin labels, test data, or to tag rows in rotation — anything where the numbers alone of the Sequence node are not enough.

Example

Three-letter bin codes

  • Pattern={A}{A}{A}
  • Start At=AAY
  • How Many To Generate=4
Nothing connected: the node makes the table

Plain numbers with a prefix and suffix are the Sequence node's job; this one is for letters and mixed codes.

Worth knowing

  • Pattern: {A} counts A to Z, {a} counts a to z, {0} counts 0 to 9, and everything else is kept as typed. So {A} gives A, B, C; {A}{A}{A} gives AAA, AAB, AAC; A{0}A gives A0A, A1A, A2A; and INV-{0}{0}{0} gives INV-000, INV-001.
  • Several counters behave like an odometer: the one on the right moves first and carries into the one on its left.
  • Start At begins the series somewhere other than the first value; it has to fit the pattern, so AAB fits {A}{A}{A}.
  • Step counts on by more than one each time, so {0}{0} with a step of 5 gives 00, 05, 10.
  • A list that repeats takes your own values, comma separated, and cycles them — handy for rotas and round-robin labels.
  • A pattern makes a fixed number of values (26 × 26 × 26 for three letters); past the last one it starts again, and the node says so.
